Remembering my Uncle Chuck this Memorial Day. My namesake Charles Ayres was my Mom’s oldest brother who was her faithful protector from her birth in 1925 until he left Toledo to join the U.S. Army in South America in the late 1930s. Later went to Europe looking for their other brother Robert Ayres and was captured by Nazis and tortured to death without revealing the troop info the Nazis wanted.
